What size is this plug bolt on the 1982 GS550?

Hi folks,

I have a TTO heat temp digital meter which I want to covert to an oil temp meter. TTO sells an oil temp sensor and a bunch of adapters so you can install the sensor in most threaded holes. I was thinking the oil channel which feeds the head would be a good place to install the sensor. The channel is accessible via a hex plug bolt seen in the center of this picture:



Has anyone removed this bolt? Does anyone know the size? Do you think its ok to put a sensor in there? Is there a better place on this motor?

Take it out and measure it. I believe it is a 14 MM but you'd have to use a pitch gauge ( or someone here may know the pitch ) to get the right thread.

Most likely a 1.25 pitch but verify that with a gauge or a concensus here.

Just measured, on my '78 550 it's 14mm x 1.25, the threaded portion is about 12 or so mm long. Be careful, anything longer will block the oil passage which goes to the main bearing.

1100e has a temp sensor mounted in the pressure sensor cover under the chain adjuster. It is a narrow sensor. There are various people that have made adapters for 8v oil coolers that would have enough meat to drill an orafice for your sensor. Otherwise look up Reno Bruce's posts he used to sell kits for oil pressure gauges in the port you are looking st as well as into the oil pan. Another place is the filter cover.
