Determine year/model from engine serial numbers

Is there a way to determine the year/model of an engine from the engine serial numbers? I have two engines. One I believe is a 77-79 gs750 (with round covers on the end of the valve cover) and I believe the other is a 80-83 gs 750 (with rectangular covers on the valve cover).

The two serial numbers I have are:
    GS750-34314
    GS75X-118417

I don't have the frames for either of the engines.

Do my assumptions sound correct for the years? I need to order some parts and I want to make sure I order the right ones.

Happy to post pictures if that would help.

Thanks, Steve! That helps as well. From what I gather, if I have a 78 hs750, for example, most parts are interchangeable from 77-79, correct?

The engine column is the number they started with for that models year. Same with the frame numbers.
