1980 GS1000G Starter Clutch Interchangeable with other models?

Have a problem with my starter clutch... The clutch spring & plunger must have pushed backwards hard enough to punch a hole in the cover plate, that holds all three spring/plungers..

Need to hear from the experienced, if I can purchase one for a GS850, or other models? None on Ebay for a GS1000.... Thanks.

    Mel

P.S. OEM parts fiches, show a different part numbers.

Well, I just confirmed last night that the 850 starter clutch won't work on a 1000G in any form of interchange. All the diameters are wrong.

According to a reverse part number lookup, only the 80-81 1000G and GL used this starter clutch. I haven't heard anyone claim yet that a part from another bike will swap on. If I missed it, I need to hear it again.

Chuck Hahn said he's had good results with a weld repair on this kind of thing. I don't think I could do that weld, and I don't know anybody who could.

I don't get how those little springs and pins could do this kind of damage. Perhaps oil accumulates behind the pin, somehow creating a hydraulic lock when the engine kicks back against the starter. Does anybody know for sure?

I used a 1000G starter clutch on my 1000E so it stands to reason you could go the other way as well.
You gotta have the gear to go with the assembly because the needle bearing is larger on the G clutch (the main difference between them I think).

I hate to buy one without confirming somehow, but if we can't get someone to dig up some 1000G clutches, I guess we'll have to try that. Thanks for the option.

If the ramps are still OK on that one I'd be taking it to a welder to have the holes TIG'd back up. Probably get it done for a 6 pack of beer
          Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

          Past:
          VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)

            Needle bearing size:

            1000E - (P/N 09263-25020) RN 25 X 29 X 10 BRG

            1000G - (P/N 09263-25030) RN 25 X 30 X 9.9 BRG

25mm is the ID. Same for both so you know they will fit on the crank.

If you're still looking for a starter clutch, I have one from a 1980 GS1000. PM me.

It's looking like this will work, but I'm waiting on an undamaged gear.
