GS1000(?) stator cover identification.

Bought this cover to fit on a 78 GS1000E motor. it fits the crankcases no problem, all the bolt holes line up, but it wont fit over the flywheel. It is obviously off a model with a smaller flywheel/stator.
Question is, what model could it be from? I need to know so i can advertise it for sale again.

I know that the 850G and 1000G share a gasket, and the 850 is pretty much based on the 750.

The rest of the crankcase might be different, but evidently the stator cover mating area is the same.

Cross reference the stators themselves? Electrosport's site says the 750 and 850 (along with 550) use the same stator. I'm guessing the 1000 and 1100 use a larger one. That cover may be for the 750 and 850 models.

It looks like my 750 cover but I don't have it in front of me to compare.

I looked at my bikes and the boss pointing down on the outside of yours points back on the 1100's.

yeah that boss sticking out is about the 4 oclock position on the 1000 covers as well.
i could easily cross reference the stator part numbers but without knowing the size of the stators to start with makes the exercise a bit pointless.
i am guessing that the models with the 12 pole stators would be the smaller versions but i dont know if that is the case.

From that list, it's the 750 and 850 with the smaller stator. The larger stator fits 1000 and 1100.

Close, but not quite. The 12 pole stators were only on kick-start bikes. That means that the '79 850 had a 12-pole, but the '80 and newer 850s have 18-pole stators. Same diameter, just different number of poles. All of the smaller bikes, 750, 650, 550, etc. also had smaller 18-pole stators when they lost their kick starters in '80.

Can't strictly go by the year, either, as the 1000 never had a kick starter, and always had an 18-pole stator in the larger diameter.

I did some quickie parts fische glances and the cover you have is 850 and under.
The 1000 and over have the boss at the 3 o'clock position.
Of course thats judging by the pitcures and part numbers. And it wasnt an extensive search.
I looked at '78 to '80 550cc to 1100cc.
You might want narrow it down there. The 550cc had a different part number but the boss was in the same position.

so its a pretty safe bet to say that cover is off a 750 or 850, and will fit either. thats a great help, thanks Steve.
