Chain Breaking
Anyone else ever actually break a chain? I was cruising up the road one day and with a rattle, my chain departed from the bike, and I was free-wheeling. This was a 630 chain on a '82 gs1100e. Dunno why it broke. It never gave me a clue that it going to go, and I never did figure out just why. It wasn't high-mileage, or high wear that I could see. Anyone else got a story like this?Expecting the Spanish Inquisition

Doubtful it broke
Master link came apart
Was it a clip master link, or a press fit?1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Photo of the broken ends would be interesting to see.
Any chance battery acid got on it? I've never actually seen a chain that broke, as opposed to the master link coming apart.'20 Ducati Multistrada 1260S, '93 Ducati 750SS, '01 SV650S, '07 DL650, '01 DR-Z400S, '80 GS1000S, '85 RZ350Comment

So this was the original 36 year old chain? I could be wrong, but the only endless chains I see, are factory installed chains. If it was original and it was endless you would have to remove the swing arm to install it, not something you see as a replacement. If it was still the original chain, well that may explain why it broke.Comment

If your chain simply left the bike, consider yourself VERY LUCKY.
There have been countless stories of chains jamming against the crankcase, damaging them, as well as others locking up the rear wheel, causing some rather exciting moments.

Chain broke on a CB200 but it was the master let go.
Was riding pillion on a CB250N at 60 mph when the chain jumped the rear sprocket and locked the back wheel but it didn't break.97 R1100R
