Help with clutch please

Hi to you all today i replaced the friction plates and steel plates with standard springs to my gs750db, I drained the oil overnight soaked new friction plates in new oil,

Today i removed the springs and hub plate removed old plates and proceeded installing new i did,nt touch clutch cable did,nt think it necessary, So when all was put back and tightened up i squeezed the clutch handle and nothing was quite slack. Checked the manual for adjusting cable which i have done and there is now good resistance and i can see the plates moving out and in but when i put it in gear and try to move the wheel by hand its still in gear.

I should mention i have not put the clutch cover on or filled with new oil at this point is this something i should do or have i missed a step or do i need to replace the cable as the threaded bar inside clutch cover is almost all the way in.

Advice please.

It sounds like you read the manual and adjusted it at the proper places. I'd try to ride the bike, gently. Just trying to turn the rear wheel by hand doesn't usually break the plates free but sitting on it and trying to move Man+Machine will soon inform you. Keep your hand on the brake of course....Or, you could try to roll the machine on a level driveway I guess

Thank you for the advice i read the manual from the link on this site my haynes one says you should tighten clutch springs fully no mention of torque settings.

I did,nt want to go all the way and put new gasket on fill with oil and find i have to take it all apart again, i gave myself 2 days holiday 1 day to fix clutch 2nd day to ride around still one step at a time i really dont want to cock this up.

Go read the factory manual on how to adjust the clutch cable. It has nothing to do with tightening the clutch spring bolts. And lube the actuation helix while you are at it.

I was making a comparison between a Haynes manual and the one from bikecliff,s where one is *@%^$*@%^$*@%^$*@%^$e the other more informative,

will do as instructed tho. now i know what your on about i,ve already done that, tick.

The Haynes manuals vary, bike to bike but my Haynes' usually have a torque chart somewhere in the chapter beginning I think.

Reading manuals online or even a pdf on a computer is a PIA practically speaking... Either print the pages or spend $30 for a manual is a worthy purchase -less than some gaskets you buy.

Looks like i will have to i,ll be honest i used to thrash the gs750 i had in my twenty,s and did,nt care enough about the bike traded it in for a honda vf750 then marriage,babies ect,ect,

Now i got another gs its a whole new ball game every thing is old including me,and parts are hard to come by its taken me a year to find a set of down pipes in reasonable condition on the look out for a decent set of mufflers now probably end up with a set of marving retro,s but i,ll keep looking at auto jumbles and ebay.

But i love it tinkering in the garage till late beats TV any day.

An update seems i had adjusted the clutch cable too much and was always out of gear so i reset the whole cable again and hey presto
a working clutch going to take her out for a short spin later and as always there be a little tweak here and there just glad i didn't completely cock up. The clutch holding tool was a breeze to use a good purchase i think.
