Waspish noise ... (but it didn't start with a tick ...)

Has anyone encountered the "angry wasps" noise when your girl is up around 5K? My suspicion is the Timing Chain is slack and flexing out into a casing, or something ... but, I'm still learning the ways of the GS ...

Check the heat shields on the exhaust pipes where they pass under the motor; they're famous for coming loose and vibrating at about that rpm. And the crossover clamp underneath as well. The whole exhaust system is a potential percussion section.

I've got something on my bike harmonizing at a perfect 5th above the engine at 5000 RPM. I've decided it's nothing to worry about, until it is.

No sir, I have not, but funny thing happened about a week past ... tach cable came off, out of the blue, and when I reconnected it, the entire cable was saturated with motor oil .... I thought it odd, ruminated about the effects of gravity upon hot liquids and old seals and banished it from my mind, until re-occurance ... now, I think I shall disconnect it, wrap the end with ducting tape temporarily and see if the noise has disappeared. Thank you.

Any chance you might be willing to give us a clue what bike we are discussing?

I had a similar noise on my '83 850 GL
It was the heat shield - the mount had rusted and it was loose
Got a clamp on it and it was quiet again
