    81 and 83 1100

Does anyone know if a head for an 83 1100E would be a direct bolt on to an 81 1100E block?

I just looked up the part numbers and they are different. Yes, I know there will be a different number for the '83 with its black paint, but I went a step further and looked at the cylinder head cover gasket. There is one part number for '80/'81 and a different part number for '82/'83. Looking at the picture in the parts fiche, it appears that on the early one there are two bolts on each side of the front edge, while on the later one there are three bolts on each side.

If this is anything like the "extra bolt(s) in 1982 scenario" on the 850s that I deal with more, the head will likely swap over just fine, but you will also need the cover that goes with it.

80-81 has less valve cover bolts and in different locations than the 82-83. So if you switch heads you will need the matching valve cover. Dar

So the valve cover pattern is different but what about the head bolt pattern?

I did it, I installed an '83 GS1100 head on my '81 GS1100E . As stated , you just have to use the '83 valve cover and gasket. Head gasket is the same . over 10 years and all good.
