How do I get the clutch back in?

I can't seem to get the metal plate far enough in to put back the metal wire into its little slot.

is there some trick to this?

Rumour has it the wire can be left out without problems arising.

Works fine without the wire. In over 45 years of working on them and building them, I've NEVER replaced that wire or had an issue because of it.

It was part of a Japanese gov plan to subsidize piano wire producers as sales slumped with the advent of electronic keyboards.
