GS750 gearbox

hi all.
i have re built my gs750 and the engine is back in the frame but i cant get neutral, is there a way to check or re try the indexing on the gearbox without taking the whole engine apart again?. i followed the factory manual exactly and was sure the indexing was correct but still cant get neutral,
any help very gratefully appreciated.

Are you trying to do this without disengaging the clutch? You may have to rotate the engine (always forward) a bit, to get it in Neutral. That's all I got.

the clutch isn't on yet, i wanted to try to get it in neutral first before going any further
