frame materials?

what kind of steel or aluminum would you use to make a frame
Ive heard of DOM being used but what kind and skid pipe , and ERW pipe

oh and cromoly

Not knowing anything about your abilities or friends and finances, I would recommend that you stick to mild steel tubing. It is strong and for the amount you will need not all that much heavier than chromoly(4140/4145) tubing. Most exotic metals need very specific welding procedures to produce a safe weld. Chromoly for example will crack next to the weld if not pre-heated properly before welding. Unless you have professional help stick with mild steel, if you can run a good bead you can weld it.
