Header paint

I am going to paint my headers black. Should I use the paint for fireplaces that's rated to 1200 F or is there a special paint for just that purpose. Thanks Ted

If its a nice bike go for the hpc or jet hot.

VHT header coat is expensive, and the stuff is garbage, it WILL flake off after a short period of time. I have repainted severall exhausts, and I highly recommend Rustoleum stove paint. It will not completely dry until you actually put the coating through a few "heat cycles". Once the paint is all cured it is a super tough and long lasting coating.

And there are only about three current chrome facilities in the US, and they have an approximate 3 month backlog.

Painting headers

Take a look at the following link. It has worked out really well for me. No sign of deterioration or peeling.

Chrome

The header chrome is good from the point where the 4 tubes meet the main muffler, then to the end of the muffler. The 4 tubes from the head are yellowish and not very attractive. This is the part I want to paint black and leave the rest of the header chrome . The bike is in really good shape, but being a 1980 I don't want to sink too much money into by chroming. Would the header look good if I finished it this way? Thanks Ted

Have your tired Blue Away? It does a fairly decent job. I have seen black collectors with chrome muffler in Dennis Kirk catalogue. Not too bad. Go there and take a look.

I have had great luck also with a product called "Blue-Job"

You need to polish chrome

My headers (old 4 into 1) were rusty/manky, on my gs1000s.
Painted em with VHT hi temp, went white and flaky after a while.
Last time she was off the road for a while, I bit the bullet and hooked in with a big brass wire brush on an angle grinder.
Rust converter, more angle brush, mothers metal polish.
Did some minor blueing by spraying WD on hot pipes.
After a few good runs starting to colour up nicely.
