Tank-What year is my bike???

Well, I'm digging into my GS1000 project (cafe', streetfighter, Yoshi-like bastard bike) and now I'm not sure I have what I think I have (the bike... )

Title says "1978 Suzuki GS1000". Bike appears to be a GS1000 C model I think as it as the spoked wheels and single disk front. It does have case guards that appear to be factory. Color is dark blue with gold stripes on tank and tail. BUT...shouldn't a 1978 have indents on the tank? And wouldn't a GS produced 9/78 actually be a '79?

Not that it's any biggie. I only ran across this as I'm considering either fixing the dented tank or buying another one. I ran across a nice tank at a salvage yard the other day that was labeled as a "79 GS1000E or 83 GS1000G", but it had the indent. Filler was in the middle/front just like the GS1000's.

So I guess I have too questions....is my bike a 78 or a 78? And is gas tank with an indent a '78 GS1000 (C or E)? If so, I'm in bidness!

Thanks! Yup, that's the thread that got me thinking. I'm pretty sure the tank is NOT a '83 G model. Sounds like maybe I should snag the "mystery" tank after all!

GS 1000 Tank

I know this is four to five years too late. If you didn't snag the tank with the indent you should have. They are hard to find that will hold fuel.

Here's a '78 GS1000E tank that has an indent, the C models came in dark blue and a maroon. Only the '78's have indents.

Well, there aren't any '83 1000G's. There were 1100G's and they had a different tank.

An 1100G 1100G tank is like every 1100G tank, and 850G tanks from '82 on. They have slight vertical creases on the sides forming "knee dents" about 1/3 of the way forward from the rear, and two horizontal mounting tabs in the back.

The 78 GS1000C has the side indents and they were also on the tail piece. Check this thread for a pic of my 78.

Not really sure why "the new guy" brought this back from the archives with an attempt at giving current advise.

What do you mean it WAS awesome? It still is. Didn't come that way when I bought it. It was 2 tone - rust and dirt. Spent all its prior life outdoors. Gave a whopping $380 for it. Dumped about $1500 in it winter of 95. Was riding a shiny new Virago at the time. One ride on the GS and the Virago (POS) immediately went to market. What a slug.
Typical redo. Engine out, strip and paint the frame. Unlace wheels - rims polished and clear anodized. Refurnished the spokes with electroless nickle plating, machined the casting flash off the hubs. Relaced and trued the wheels (I am a machinist by trade). That's the 4 into 1 that was on it, but it was rusted chrome, Had them blasted and ceramic coated. The paint scheme is mine. I decided to go with my old high school colors - maroon and white. I had those colors professionally painted, then added the black stripes with tape. Made this and added that including dual automotive horns. Bike horns suck. Adding new ones and plan to do a photo essay on installation soon.
