    Engine painting

I have a GS1000 with a tired looking engine. The engine itself is in perfect running order. Rather than dismantling a perfectly good engine and running the risk of creating oil leaks etc on reconstruction (not to mention the cost of new gaskets) is there a good method in respraying an engine as a whole unit?

Use the search box, type in Engine Painting, select titles only. Literally dozens of threads on the subject.

Chuck Hahn has the answer. Start with removing the engine from the bike

You can also use aluminum foil to mask off all the areas around the engine to paint it still in the frame. Very little masking tape and paper required with that method. Just pinch the foil around frame tubes, carbs, and anything else around the engine. Easy.

First time hearing that aluminum foil tip.
Thanks, Larry. I will be giving that a try.

i would yank the engine. Reason being its gonna need degreased to the 2000 percent clean with purple power or comparable cleaner. Get a parts washer brush, tooth brushes, and hemostats. Scrub it best you can and use rags and hemos in the fins. Of course block off intakes and exhausts. Once your staisfied its spotless power wash it or use a hose to rinse. if using a hose rinse the dog snot out of it to ensure degreaser residue is removed.
Next blow it as dry as you can with the compressor tgen let air dry overnight. Now its degreased, residues gone, and itsas dry as its gonna get. Paint away and let dry 24 hours.
In between the fins on top of the head i roll up 100 grit paper and floss between them to get corrosion off. blow debris away with air. Paint the head with the spark plugs in to protect threads and keep paint out of cylinders. Just wire wheel the plugs once paints dried

AND THIS FROM OUR ESTEEMED MEMBER ERIC BANG!! RIP ERIC.

An added footnote... I use my floor jack and a piece of 2X6 under the oil pan to jack the engine up even with the frame. I also take the valve cover off as this gives an extra inch or so clearance when jacking the engine up. Last engine i installed took 20 minutes from start to having the bike back on the lift and strapped down.
