    '78 GS1000 Wheel Update

I picked up '82/83 GS1100 rims & rotors from a GSR brother, with the idea that I could fit them to my '78 GS1000. I liked the look of the 3-point pattern, and thought they would look unique on my bike. With only a few hassles I made it work. Lots of stripper...masking tape...cussing...Pictures tell the story.

No, that's not a pizza in my wife's oven! I owe her a set of pot holders.

Here's the wheels before I had the tires mounted. I used safety-wired ss allen head bolts instead of the hex bolts with the bent tabs.

For the rear sprocket I replaced the square head bolts inside the hub with square head nuts. Together with the safety-wired bolts, they can't come loose.

Here's what they look like on the bike. Still a work in progress.

I have more pics, but I was limited to four!

Biggest challenge was the front rotors. On the GS1100 the rotors were 275mm. The '78 calipers were made for 295's. So the stock calipers were hitting on the spider web of the new rotors. I had to find calipers from an '80 GS1000E, which fit the '78 forks & the '82 rotors. Whew! I feel like Johnny Cash!

I was thinking about doing something very similar with my wheels. Gotta say, yours turned out great.

NICE!!! Those must be '83 rims, cause they do not look anything like my '82 EZs rims....so tell me, how long to get the paint smell outta the house/oven?? Your wife must be VERY understaing of your addiction to allow you to bake your rims in the oven, or else she wasn't home...which was it?:-D

            I love the 78-79 1000's.......

Yeah, I guess your right. I forget the name of the brother who sold 'em to me, and what he rides (sorry dude, I'm grateful just the same).

My wife was freeking out...just a little. She is very understanding, and supports my hobby. Besides, she knows it's my mid-life crisis. It's either motorcycles, or I get a girlfriend.[-X I really do owe her a set of pot holders. She's very easy to please.

Here's some more pics. Square nuts inside the sprocket hub can't turn.

Those bolts look like they're recessed. Not so. It's an optical illusion. They stick out of the nut by about 1/2 thread. Should be longer, I know. But they're not going anywhere.

Allen head bolts are lock-wired, so they can't turn. I had to drill the bolt heads myself.

                Looking good Tom!
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Are those wheels lighter in weight than the originals? It looks great!!! What diameter is the rear wheel?

I don't know if they're lighter or not. I got 'em for looks. Can't be too much different.

Rear wheel is 17". Same as the original.

The wheel thing is kinda half-baked

i'm guessing this quickens cure times

Is that home-grown powdercoating or paint?

                            Either way turned out nice!

Just plain old rattle-can red. I hope it holds up to road grime & cleaning.
