82 gs850 gas tank what options are there

I was going to repaint a tank and side covers for a friend when I but getting into it I noticed that someone had drilled through the tank tring to get the emblems on. They patched it with bondo but the paint was bubbling there and you could see where the gas ate through the bodo.

I was wondering what other years or modles would fit on the 82 gs850. Or is there a good way to seel it. Someone tried to do the tank cream but it's all flaking. So local radiator shops won't red coat it because they can't clean all of the gunk out. So I think best would be a new tank. I just wondering what options I have for a tank.

    Thanks In Advance.

GS1100G tank is the same as far as I know.

If the only thing wrong is the failing Kreem job and the hole, it can be repaired. Strip the paint on the outside and find someone to weld the holes closed. To get the Kreem out, dump in some pea gravel and some paint stripper. Shake the crap out of the tank and rotate every few hours to keep the inside wet. Of course, you will need to fashion caps for the various hole openings.

I just go done doing a tank like this and it was not fun, but it can be done. Check the Tips and Tricks forum for more information.

      I had the same problem!

When I got my 79 GS 1000 L the previous guy had done the same thing. Instead of welding I would advise you to solder or braze it. I tried to weld mine, and did nothing but burn more holes in it. Good luck!!
