    Fairing question

I like the retro look of the older upper cowl fairings. I was wondering though, how do they connect to the bike? Are they pretty much interchangeable through the gs models?

If you mean like the GS1150EF, I know they have a separate frame that mounts to the steering stem and the front down tubes and then the body attaches to that. I do know that the 1150 fairing will swap over onto a '83 1100E but anymore than that

      Jake,
Here is what the fairing subframe mount locations look like on a gs1150.

Some of those smaller fairing attach to the forks, like the GS1000S (Wes Cooley) fairing, and others, like the 750ES and 1100ES/EF, use a sub frame that bolts to the motorcycle frame so the fairing does not turn with the handlebars like the fork mounted fairings.

Many of the fork mount fairings are easy to retrofit but the frame mount type are far more involved to adapt since the frame has special mounting lugs and the subframe is designed to fit snuggly around the specific components available on that particular model bike.

The Maier aftermarket on on my ED, is 4 point attach:
          2 attachments using handlebar clamps
2 attachments using brackets on headlamp (headlamp to ear ) mounting bolts

If you look closely at the side of the fairing; there are two large decorative SS bolt heads; that is where the fairing attachs.

i'm getting the Maier for next year. I rode lucabonds Gk, although larger than the Maier, i really like the wind deflection.

The reason I ask is that I found this little fairing looking around on ebay. It needs some work, but I thought maybe I might be able to fit it up. Trouble is it doesn't come with mounts, and I don't know what specific kind it is.

if that fairing is a Maier you can purchase mounting kits from parts-unlimited.

Yeah I'd say that you're probably right. Looked around, and it looks like the mount kit is real easy to come by. Sweet! I really dig this type of fairing.

as i said earlier i'm getting one in the near future. In Parts-unlimited there are two sizes for the 7" round headlight. Not sure if i want the larger one or not.
                        Large body measures 18” H x 15” W x 10” D
