Here is a project I completed this fall.
I found this 81 GS 1100 listed in Craigslist had no picture, wanted $1200. I got there to find this bike that had been stored in a back bedroom of a house since 1997. I got it for $800, had cash and my van to haul it away that day. First pictures are in the van when I got home.




I took it to the custom (chopper) shop that I worked at and did the following repairs.
Steering head bearings, Progressive fork springs and full fork service with new fork seals from Suzuki. Bridgestone BT-45 tires with new tubes, new chain, pulled the swingarm and lubed the bearings. Cleaned and painted the header, then had the painter shoot the tank, covers and seat parts black. Replaced the grips, throttle and clutch cables.
When I pulled the carbs to clean them I found the head had been ported, and it looked like a nice job too.

I originally was going to ride this bike for the summer and sell my ZX-12R and save my money till I found a deal on a ZX-14. It took 3 days of riding this bike to decide that I very much liked the brakes and tires of a modern sportbike and went and bought a new silver ZX-14.
I drag race a wheelie bar, slick, lockup clutch GS1100 twice a week and thought I would take the shop owner to the races and let him race the bike in the streetbike shootout races locally. He did a great job went a couple of rounds at several races, the bike ran 11.80?s at 131, wow did it have some trap speed.



I learned later that the engine in the bike had been built by a local Prostock racer in 1996, installed in 1997 and then ridden less than 1000 miles till the owner had a health problem and drained the bike and parked it in the back bedroom for the next 12 years.
Engine was bored to 1168, crank was fully welded, head was ported with 1mm oversize valves and a small set of cams installed. This is why the trap speeds were so good at the drags.
I pulled the engine for my drag bike as a spare and found an 82 GS 750 engine swapped it in and everything hooked up and made for a great package.

I sold this to a young man (24) for his first street bike, I think he will be ok he rides a CR500 in the woods. $1000, I think I treated him right. I told him about this site I am sure he will come and introduce himself.

Bike looks real good in black; Not so sure about the fairing, but it surely helped in the trap speed. That 1166/1mm oversize/ported head is a nice street combo(ask me how I know )

I happen to like that fairing. Do you know what make or model it is? Almost looks like a cross between a GS-ES and a Kaw GPz fairing. If you ever decide to part with it I'd be interested.

Yes Sir... I'm a like'n that fairing too. I don't have any idea about how it affected trap speed but if sure LOOKS slick.

Hmmm, my eyesight isn't what it used to be but... that fairing sure looks like it could have come from an "83 GPZ1100. Interesting!
