Paint Polishing...

Planning to color sand the clear coat to remove dust/dirt on the various parts I've recently painted and was wondering what you guys recommend in terms of materials and/or process? Figure on sanding the nibs with 2000 grit but what to use for polish? I have a full size polisher but it's heavy and seems like overkill on a these cycle parts.

Ed...I use the 2000 grit like you mentioned and go to a fine cut finishing compound and follow it up with a 3M product called Micro Glaze.

Mirror finish (good wax and VERY soft 100% cotton cloth).

I use cloth diapers. You can buy them at any large Wally World or similar.

So you recommend polishing by hand Dave?

I use 1200 wet, followed by 3m Imperial hand glaze with a wool pad.
Use about 1300 rpm but no more. It takes a bit of a fine touch to do it without burning the paint.

I follow that with a foam pad and 3m finess-it.

I have a hand drill (1300 rpm) and buy wool pads with a screw on mandrel on it, this makes it easy to hold the part in one hand and buff with the other.
