A tale of two tanks

Here's my dilemma,the tank off my 85 has a dent here

And a small one that does not show in pics

It's been Kreamed to.

Got this 84 tank from a local guy I sold one of my 83 tanks to


Nice and clean inside but

There was some silicone on the back,when I scraped it off this is what I found.So which one should I fix and paint.
BTW I still have no extra cap as this is the one off the 84 tank

Needs a screwdriver to open and you cant even get a Suzuki key in anymore.

Personally I would take it to a pro, have it boiled out and coated inside. It would be worth the cost. Or find another tank in better shape

Im just curious if you could sand off that mess on the second one... Just go nuts on it until you reach something clean...

there were a lot of tanks poping up on ebay ,after i bought mine for a hefty price!, they were cheap to keep checking,if there that bad i would save time and money on the newer one

Was just going to strip the second one .Actually I think that is what I will do I can deal with the back and that is not in a place that shows.Getting another tank is not going to happen.

I'd strip the second one down and see what you really have. That rough patch can be cleaned up easily enough with some sandblasting and a skim coat of bondo.

Actually, I bought a Suzuki key off a fellow on ebay recently and it worked great. The trick is to know the original bike your cap came from if the three digit number is not on the key cylinder you have.

I forget if my 3 digit number was on the ignition one or the helmet lock but it's there somewhere.

That rust on the outside is nothing, easy stuff. You could use acid, sandblasting, electrolysis, any of these methods will work fine. I'd use whichever tank is cleanest on the inside, that's a lot harder to fix.

That locHave a cap with a key that fits that tank.Put that inbecause I've had a few poeple here ask if I had another one like it.This one is missing the handle that makes it work.The whole thing seems a little fragile,looks good though.
I have decided to strip and fix the second tank.The rear is a easier fix than the other tank with the plus of no liner.
