    front fender differences?

Anyone know if there is any difference in the front fenders from different models (GL to say a GK) also, is the front tire a different size from say a 550 to a 1100? I have a 1100GL and am looking for a front fender but having trouble finding one in a 1100GL found in a 450L, 550L, 650L or a 1100GK etc. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Hi,

The "L" models most often had chrome fenders but the GL and GK should interchange. I don't know about fenders from the smaller bikes. (Although I think a 650 fender would fit the larger bikes.) As for tire size, the larger bikes generally run 100/90, or sometimes 110/90 and the smaller bikes sometimes run 90/90. You don't want to go too wide with the tire sizes as it adversely affects handling. Please wait for more first hand experience to be voiced before you make any purchasing decisions.

EDIT: Correction, as Mr. Redman mentions in post #3, the GK has bigger forks than other GS models. Fenders are probably not interchangeable. Sorry.

One way to determine interchangeability is to compare the part numbers.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

      L fenders are chrome, right?

      G fenders painted.

What I can tell you from my experereince is that front fenders for 1100GK are wider than fender on 1100G. (GK forks are bigger and wider apart, so fender is wider).

Not certain, but I would think 850 and 1100 front wheel/fender would be the same.

        G fenders painted.
Depends on the year. I've actually seen both painted and chrome on two different G's as well.

I think all L's had leading axle forks, so the fenders are different. Put an L fender on straight forks and it will hit the tire at the rear. I've seen it done by redrilling the holes but it still didn't look right. The same goes for putting a G fender on an L, but it hits in front.

Painted fenders from 82-mod and up (europe models). But have seen some US-mod with painted fenders from 81.

As far as I know, only 1979 G's had chrome fenders in the USA. A chrome one will bolt on to replace painted fenders though.

                I currenly own 4 1980G's and a 1981. In the past, I have owned numerous other '79, '80, and '81 850G's and 1000G's. Only the '79 had a chrome fender.

650L and 850L are the very similar. 850 appears to have a longer side mount for the tire to fender clearance.. 850L and 1000-1100 L are the same as well. I have parts from both, on the front of my 850. Standard tire size on the 650 is a 90/90/19 but the 100/90/19 will fit just fine. That is what I'm running on mine (650L). 100/90/19 is standard on the 850-1100 as far as I know and you can tell that the spacing between the fender and the tire is larger on the 850.

Conclusion from working/looking at both in the shop is that a 650L fender will not fir the 850-1100 bikes if running anything larger than a 100/90/19 front tire.
