chrome removal from points cover.

hi, I need to remove some chrome from my points cover, most of it has weathered and peeled off, but there is still some stubborn areas left, ive tried a razorblade, and this removed some of the chrome, however there is some nickleplate left, and this is hard to shift. I have read the post by 7thday in the tricks and tips section, he describes a method using muriatic acid water bath, has anyone tried this, would it damage the alloy. I could send the part to a plater, but with the cost of doing it and shipping, I might just be better off buying a part off ebay, etc. any advice would be appreciated.

what are you planning for the cover? are you going to paint it or polish up the bare aluminium?

hi, im going to polish the alloy,does this make a difference to the removal of the chrome.

not really, just wondering as if you were going to paint it then i would just rub it down.
have you tried wet sanding it with fairly coarse wet and dry paper?
if that dont work then get it bead blasted

What model bike? Never seen a chrome points cover before. Most are aluminum with a clear coat. You can remove the clear with common paint stripper then polish the cover to restore the shine.

hi, bike is a 1982 GS750EZ, cover is not the original, that was damaged, when previous owner came off the bike, I think i will get another one, think it will be the best option.

You can probably do better on e-bay, but there's just so many covers, you'd have to sort to find the right one, otherwise I'd look for you.

Here's one on E-bay, but you probably have the blackened emblem.

Sorry to hear about your unemployment, maybe you can find one abandoned near you.
