    Missing emblems

    The gas tank on my 1000E had the Suzuki emblem removed by a PO and apparently bondo was used to make a smooth surface. Since the tank needs to be repainted, I was wondering how hard it would be to remove the bondo and reveal the small bar with the screw holes so I could attach the emblems which I already have. Or should I just leave it smooth and use another method of adhesion to put the emblems back on?

    Shouldn't be to hard to find the holes and clean them out. I'd sand down the tank to metal with a random orbital sander. The holes should become apparent as long as they didn't weld them up. You can then pick out the Bondo and clean the threads.

      When you get to the bar with the holes after sanding, buy an M3 .5 pitch tap (standard thread for the 3mm screws) and re-tap the holes.

        Make sure you get a bottoming tap. You don't want to run the pointy end of a tap into the tank. You can grind the tip flat on a standard tap to give you what you need.

          Thanks for the good tips. I will be tackling this after the riding season has ended. Maybe some time after the first of the year.

            I picked the bondo out of those holes on a GL tank with little hook. Didn't even mess-up the paint. I had an emblem to use to figure out how far apart the holes were and where they would be. I think I first probed with a straight pin to confirm the location. I may have also twirled a tiny drill-bit with my fingers to get a little material out. It was years ago. Any minor paint chipping at the border of the little holes was covered by the emblem.

              Maybe I can use a magnet to detect where the bondo is to begin with. IDK, just a thought.

                Do you definitely know he did that? For a long time when Suzuki had replacement tanks available they were the S type meant for stick-on decals. Just a thought...

                  No I don't know for a fact that it was done. All I am basing my opinion on is the fact that from the inside of the tank it "looks" like the bar is there.

                    As was said before, sand it down like youd be prpepping for the repainting. If you hit the bondo them proceed with finding and cleaning out the holes.
