Complete tear down
Anyone ever do a complete tear down? Greg's bike was looking rather ragged before he crashed. We were going to repaint it this winter anyway and I want to do everything... Frame, tank, tail all the parts that need it.... There's a bit of surface rust on there and I was wondering what the best practice is with painting plastic... mainly the sidecovers.Tags: None

Re: Complete tear down
Sidecovers = A big bucket of water/hose, Sandpaper (the kind for wetsanding from 100 to 1500), a sanding rubber block and lots of work. Keep the covers and paper wet, dunk them after a bit of sanding and repeat till smooth. Work your way through the grits. After the paint is totally off, then start going up till you get to the 1000, 1500. Should feel smooth when you are done. You'll have to do the tail section like that as well. Use Chemical stripper on the tank and follow up with those throw away drill grinder wheels. Work miracles.Originally posted by skreemerAnyone ever do a complete tear down? don't touch the frame unless it looks like complete a$$, a little rust just paint over it. try to clean the frame the best you can with some kerosene and purple power degreaser, then see what that looks like.
i am currently repainting a frame and it is not fun, almost thinking i should have had someone do it.

How long did it take to get everything "off" then back "on"?Originally posted by Hoomgar

Every thing was off in about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is yet to be back on because I am still waiting on the engine.Originally posted by skreemerHow long did it take to get everything "off" then back "on"?Originally posted by Hoomgar

Sanding and painting the frame was complete within the first week.
It looks great. Check out my WWW below.
The frame on wheels can be seen there as well as everything else that has been done so far.

That;s what my bike needs to look like. My frame is /brown. It was black originally. I want to get the bike back to black, or make it really white. Skreemer, we CAN do it in a week or three. :-) And sanding will help my motor skills. You'd have to be crazy to be sane in this world -Nero
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back....... You probably highsided.
