    Gauges

    Anyone ever open up a set of gauges, my 79 850, started making a lot of noise then the needle fell off
    It?s my bike I?ll run it in the ground if I want to

    There are a number of threads on this in the archives. In a nutshell: pry open the crimp ring on the back side that won't show and split the gauge open. Once open there isn't a whole lot of info on what to do so you are sort of on your own there. You can easily lube and clean though.

        Mimd the spring (it's like the mainspring of an automatic watch), when cleaning it; if it goes out of shape, it's difficult to put back.

          Mine have worked quite well after opening them up and cleaning them. Took a bottle of rubbing alcohol and rinsed off the innards, let it dry out and gave it a good bath with 3 in 1 oil. Be careful with the alcohol, a small bit dripped off the edge on to the face and ate the finish off it, luckily very little showed after reassembly.
