Paint Gurus - 2k primer - base and clear

I will likely go down to bare metal (tank needs minor bondo work too) as I?ve had mixed luck going over factory paint in the past albeit with true rattle
can (unless someone can convince me I?m wasting my time).

If you use a 2k epoxy primer out of a can... what do you then use for base colour? I don?t see any 2k base color for
    sale.

Can you use an epoxy primer then switch to Duplicolor for high build primer and base colour and then back to 2k cans for the clear?

also on the side covers and back section in plastic, anyone had luck scuffing the plastic and going clear straight over the plastic (and new gold
    pinstripe).

previously I?ve used duplicolor rattle with 2k over the top with good success.

If you're going down to bare metal, you should be alright using an epoxy primer that you can do body work right on top of. Give the bare metal surface some tooth..at least 80 grit before you spray the epoxy, otherwise it may not adhere. If you're going with Duplicolor primers, then use Duplicolor for you base coat, and the 2K clear should be fine. Just stay with the same name products. Mixing brands is just asking for problems.

For the side covers, I would put a base coat on those, too..even if they're black like the plastic underneath. The clear will stick to it that way.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips. I think that's where I've come a cropper in the past - mixing brands, spraying over old paint & also maybe hitting it with too much paint too quickly...

I'm planning on doing the same thing as you salty monk, using duplicolor primer/ base then shooting 2k over that. I checked 2 local autoparts stores and neither carries a duplicolor epoxy primer, which I'd also prefer to use.

Yes, I don't believe Duplicolor does any 2k stuff.

These are the ones I know of: (I met one of these at SEMA one year & I believe they are the same company these days).

What has been recommended by my PPG paint merchant is, a final seal coat of PPG epoxy primer before urethane base coat, if you wanna be sure.
I typically use spray can primers then PPG urethane base and clear coats. No issues at all several years after painting my bikes.
Spray can lacquer base coat will boil up under urethane.

Not sure I understand this? I have duplicolor spray can under the 2K clear on one of my tanks now... no issues.

I think it's the other way around. Maybe not 100%, but usually you can spray 2K over anything. If you tried to spray lacquer over any enamel or urethane, it will go crazy. Lacquer is really touchy and only works with itself, or as a base before a urethane clear.

Yeah I've definitely had that problem before where the paint goes into like spider veins all over. No way to cure it either... sand it all off & start again!!

You're right. I got it backwards because I never mixed brands or paints on something valuable.
