I have started cleaning up the rear wheel on my GS1000 and was wondering how other folks have refurbished the rear hub. I have the wheel apart as I am re-plating the spokes and short of chucking the hub in a lathe, which I do not have, I cannot figure out a way to easily get any tools to the inside portion of the hub to clean it up. Anyone done their rear hub? How did you do it? What grit abrasive did you use to get back to a stock finish?

Sorry, Ron, but <somebody> has to say it, ... that is another advantage of a shafty.
Absolutely NO problem polishing the rear end, but it's the final drive housing, not the wheel hub.

The original finish of the inner hub is not polished.
You should be able to clean it with a SOS pad, then buff it with a sisal wheel and some compound.
The outer edge, where the spokes fit, you can go SOS, 1000 grit down to 2000 or 3000 grit, then polish with Mother's. The spoke holes will take some time1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Thanks all! Looks like this hub was never washed in the 22K miles the bike has on it so I'm thinking I'll soda-blast the inner portion of the hub and see what it looks like before going any further. Really not looking for a "chrome" look, just wanting to get it back to a somewhat factory finish.Ron
