velocity stack sealing
hi everyone, I have recently bought some velocity stacks to replace some sealing components in my air intake. I was disappointed to find out today that they don't have anyway to seal and I don't want dust and dirt in my brand new engine! I was wondering if anyone has experience with these parts, how they work, and how I should seal them because right now it is just metal on metal contact. Thanks!1980 Gs250T- Passed from father to son, also my first build.Tags: None

Never had velocity stacks, but always thought they had no filters, just sucked in open, unfiltered air. Why not Pod Filters?? They're what have made the velocity stacks almost obsolete.1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100

Velocity stacks are not comparable to Pod filters.Originally posted by rphillips View PostNever had velocity stacks, but always thought they had no filters, just sucked in open, unfiltered air. Why not Pod Filters?? They're what have made the velocity stacks almost obsolete.
Stacks are for tuning intake velocity to suit the power characteristics required using calculations based on RPM, swept volume and total air flow available where pods are for providing an increased amount of filtered air.
As a simple guide short stacks are more suited for top end power and long stacks for bottom end.
Stacks are either open or are fitted with mesh to prevent the ingestion of large objects.
Commonly stacks just clamp the the carb mouth with no form of seal..

Zed, that's correct,...Stacks are for tuning intake velocity to suit the power characteristics required using calculations based on RPM, swept volume & total air flow... He maw be wanting more high RPM power or possibly more low end torque, but I's just thinking, on a "GS250" he's probably wanted filtered air to go thru his carb. I guess I shouldn't be trying to figure what someone elses needs may be...Anything is possible.1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. I have a guess that the stacks were bought as a substitute for the carb to airbox boots.Originally posted by rphillips View Postbut I's just thinking, on a "GS250" he's probably wanted filtered air to go thru his carb. Yes they are replacing the boots. But they are actually a tight fit so they will probably seal to the carb face good enough. But as for making them seal with the airbox is a different story. I did have to give them to someone I know with a chop saw to cut the trumpets off so they would actually fit in the box so I don't have them now. But it is looking like it will be plastic on metal and that won't seal. But if I took some gasket cork and wrapped it around the cut stack would that seal?Originally posted by zed1015 View Post
