Pilot jet plug?

I recently took My 1982 Suzuki GS300L carburetor out to inspect the pilot jets for clogged holes.It was not idling properly and would only run in choke. Found out that I needed to properly plug the vacuum line that goes to the petcock. Ooops.

When I opened it up, I found that the pilot jet did not have a plug that I see in the service manuals in this site.

What do those plugs do? And how would the engine run without them? I heard they help create a little vacuum?

And how the hell does the pilot jet get fuel if there is a plug?
does it get fuel elsewhere?

My bike is idling fine now. They only symptom I’m experiencing now is delayed response to the throttle as the rpm’s go crazy high for such a little change in throttle.

Hi there, the pilot draws fuel through the main jet. Without the plug the pilot is free to draw fuel directly from the float bowl. The bike will start but the slow/pilot circuit will run a bit rich. The bigger problem is that the fuel by-passes the main jet and it will run super rich on the needle/needle jet and will stutter at about 1/4 to 1/3 throttle and above.

Look at the parts fishe, or in the factory service manual, your carbs don't use the plugs.

When I took the carburetor apart I did notice a housing for the pilot jet plug.

But, the service manual does not mention anything about a pilot jet plug for the GS300L.

Well, Always learning. Now you know to use the manual and parts diagrams for "YOUR" model bike. Others models aren't necessarily the same.

Yes, Nessism's right. I assumed you had the short pilot jet BS carbs. But it seems the BS30 has the long jets which are exposed in the fuel bowl.

It is a short pilot jet I think. The pilot jet does not come all the way down to the fuel bowl. There is a housing for the plug to fit in, that’s what it looks like anyways.

A photo of the jets in your carbs would be definitive. And a picture of the external + any codes stamped on them.
