GS1000 fuel petcock

Somewhere I saw a reference to doing away with the vacumn shot-off on the tank and replacing with a standard petcock. It referred to an adapter plate but I could not locate the source. I just had the carbs out and cleaned them but now the shut-off is leaking like a sieve when I start it. I thought I had the bike sold and gave it to the fellow to complete payment before I would give the documents. Well, it ended up sitting for several months and hence the need to go back into it.

Pringle petcocks are often mentioned when the subject of manual petcocks comes up. They are not cheap, though.

Just to confirm, what year and model GS1000 do you have?
Assuming it is an '80 with the vacuum, i believe the bolt spacing on the petcock is 50mm which is not a common size. You MIGHT also need an adapter plate when going to a lever. Pingel sells the plates as well as petcocks. Maybe check with them for more information.

I too have heard about those but never seen nor been around one. Too little info. Usually these things leak while eng. not running, and fill crankcase with gas. You say leaks bad when you start the eng., I've not heard that before. Could you tell us where gas is leaking from?

If you end up getting rid of the stock petcock, you'll also need to block off the vacuum port on the carbs.

I have a '79 GS1000E and I got rid of the stock petcock 24 years ago. I bought a Pingel in polished finish. I've had only 1 problem where the lever was getting hard to turn after 18 years. I called Pingel and they offer, and still do, a rebuild service that was under $20. You mail them the fuel valve and they rebuild it and the cost includes return shipping. And they were fast.
Yes, there is an adapter plate, but it was easy to get the right one on their site. Just follow their instructions. Don't forget to cap the vacuum port at the carb.
TIP: Apply the adapter plate sealant carefully. Tighten the mounting bolts uniformly, and 6 wraps of teflon tape around the fuel valve threads is perfect so the fuel valve is tight and faces correctly.

There are many different style scooter vac operated valves for under 20 bucks. All you need is a tee so you can run vac to the petcock and the shut off valve. Im currently running the fuel valve from a 85 honda magna placed between carbs and petcock. The early 80s honda CB1000 also use a fuel valve much like the magna.

NOTE.. Doing this youll loose the PRIme function of the petcock. Youll need to crank the engine until the fuel line fills the carbs. It will seem like your cranking forever but it will fire off. Full choke and crank away.

Worst aggravation I've found with my "83" Honda CB1100f, is "NO PRIME", Honda screwed up on that. I learned quick to never let it run out of gas. For me I'd a lot rather get it started back with starting fluid, than put that much abuse to the starter. For me, Suzuki did it right. and like Big T, I've had no problems just replacing the rubber bits in the OEM. fuel valve

What nobody mentioned, Pingle has vacuum petcocks. Yes, expensive but well worth it.

Tried to look up Pingle vacuum petcock for GS1000, but their web site was confusing for me. didn't see a vacuum with 2 mounting holes. Just was gon'na look to compare to our OEM. My OEM's have always lasted several yrs. and have been easily repaired when needed. Did see some Pingle repair kits for $38 ea, but it didn't show the parts included.
