    Pull style choke

    Does anybody know if there is a conversion kit/part to mount a pull style choke directly to the carburetor? I'm looking to remove it from my handle bar and get rid of the cable style choke. Thank you.

    No, Not that I'm aware of, but sure wish they did. Once I drilled a tiny hole in that little flat piece and installed a pull knob and it worked but there was no way to hold it out into position. Was very aggravating. Have no clue what bike you're working on, but In 1981 and 1982 Kawasaki used what appears to be the same carbs on their KZ1000"s and KZ1100's as we have on GS1000's and GS1100's, that have the pull thing made on the carb rack. I'd think a set of those (a set on ebay now for a KZ1000CSR) should be a direct bolt on for our bikes with possibly just a jetting change.. Possibly look at Kawasaki carburetor parts diagram and get their parts to change your carbs to the pull knob kind... Just me I wish they'd never had a cable, the choke on the carbs never caused a problem.

        The KZ BS Mikuni's are functional similar to the GS carbs, but there are lots of small differences, such as the choke actuation. The carb body castings are tailored for the choke, with a detent mechanism, built into two of the carbs, so while it may be possible to add the pull mechanism, it wouldn't stay open unless some mods are made.

          Kiwi, that's about what I used, but without that other stuff, just a knob and a screw from the inside. no way to hold it open except just pulling on it. I's thinking the Kawa carbs had a spring loaded ball bearing that scotched itself into a detent to hold it in place, never figured the detent would be in the casting. Rekon how much mods to put the Kawa carbs on a GS, they really look similar.

            There could be off the shelf chokes available to suit your needs or you could make one if that is something you are interested in doing? For my ride I made and installed a manual choke to replace the cable choke on my project build, it works well. To make the choke rod I used a manual door lock rod and handle from a vehicle, cut to length, made an eyelet on the end of the rod and bolted it to the choke slide on the carbs.

            Your carbs look like 34mm CV so are different to the 36mm CV I have however, brackets and rods for a manual choke can be made if an aftermarket choke system isn't available for your carbs.

              You all have me thinking now.... my choke lever broke many years ago due to having lower handlebars (the lever hit the tank). I have a string tied around the end of the choke rod and hold it out while starting it. Not a big deal, but a better solution would be nice.

                Maybe it's just the photo, but the angle of these carbs seem to dip down in back. The float bowls are designed to tilt down in front, not the back. If you have enough frame clearance to lift the carbs, you might want to flip over the carb boots, this will lift the carbs up and level the float bowl.

                  I'm trying to remember ever hearing of a problem with a choke on the carbs... I'm not remembering any.

                    Carb orientation is O.K., the angles look wrong in the pics because of the angle the image was taken and perhaps because the boot clamps were loose, after the clamps were tightened the carbs tilted forward so all is well in Carb-land. Well spotted with the carb position in the sus pic, thanks for the tip.

                      I just use a tapered pen cap to hold my stock carb open.
                      Never had the side panel choke functional on the Kat.
                      My other GSXR 1100 carbs have the feature ur looking for (a knob on the left side w/detents in the rod.)
                      GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES
