    ‘83 gs550L pipe replacements

Wondering if anyone has a list of bikes that I could rip the exhaust off of to replace the 4-1 pipe that the PO of my bike installed. Picture included. Heading out to a salvage yard this weekend. I know they have a bunch of Yamaha 4-2 pipes there. As long as all the bolts line up and they extend down far enough, anything stopping me from using them?

Yamaha pipes on a Suzuki? Good luck with that! You best focus on finding a set of pipes off a similar 16V GS550.

Other than direct replacements, are there any pipes that should fit? I finally put a proper clamp between the header and muffler and that seemed to help a lot of my idling issues, so other than a rejet, I’m thinking the next best would be to put the (close to) original 4-2 exhaust setup back on it.

My opinion, A proper clamp may have "seemed" (made it sound like) it help idling issues. Kind'f like just bolting on a 4 into 1 makes a bike lot faster. The sound makes it sound (seem) a lot faster. Addressing an ex. leak will have no where the effect, on a running eng., as addressing an in. leak...Not say'in other brand exhaust can't work, but thinking sticking with Suzuki 550 or possibly 650. No clue how to know without trying something different.

I do have a dedicated thread for my idling issue, but even starting the bike is slightly easier ever since I put that clamp on. The revs are much more stable and I don’t have to play with the choke NEARLY as much. At stops, I can slow down the engine in the friction zone and it won’t immediately jump back up to 2-2500rpm as soon as I pull the clutch ever since I put the proper clamp on. So I’m thinking that the pipe I have is letting too much air through and letting the engine rev up once the oil is warm.

The simple answer would be to adjust the idle screw once the engine is warm, but then starting the bike is a nightmare, and I can’t pull the choke enough to have a stable idle. I have a set of pilot screws one size up (#37.5 up from #35) in my fortnine cart in case I don’t find any pipes. But messing with the carbs (at least in my head) is more work than sliding a set of pipes on.

As said, just my opinion. Hoping you can find a good set of exhaust and it smooths out your starting and idling problems. Yes fooling with exhaust is much easier... Also, another opinion, when your exhaust is off, get studs and nuts to replace the bolts to remount the exhaust to the head. the studs provide something to hold the pipes in place while starting nuts on the outside. You're not trying to hold the pipes in place while trying to get the bolt stuck up in there straight, hoping it's not got cross-threaded. Also a 50% less chance of twisting bolt off in the future.
