82 650L #2 Cyl Inop (Can’t find answer)
Hey yall, sorry to bother again, but I can’t seem to find the answer to my question thru the numerous pages of info. I went thru the #2 carb today for it being the only cylinder not firing (this cylinder has good spark and compression like the others). I thoroughly soaked all the passages I could get to and blew out with compressed air, as well as replacing the o-ring under the mixture screw hardwares. I could not get the idle jet or emulsifier jet out by ANY means; I’m getting to where I’m going to break something else on the carb before I ever fix this issue (why I tried just soaking the passages and blowing them out). Then after reassembly and Install, it’s doing same exact thing; ice cold exhaust header #2. Im afraid to ride it in this condition. I’ve tried my very best to study and adhere to the “common new mistakes” on here for hours trying to correct all those things. Any input or advice? TIATags: None

Is the spark plug getting wet?
If it is, likely the petcock has failed and fuel is coming down the vacuum line and flooding #2
Then, cap the vacuum line and run the bike on Prime to see if #2 will fire1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Use a guitar string or similar through the pilot jet, to make sure the passage is open.Ed
To measure is to know.

When my petcock failed and flooded the #2 cylinder like Big T is stating, it still fired. It just smelled like gas all the time and quickly fouled out the plug. I would clean the plug and it would run great for a little while until it fouled again.
I'd be inclined to believe the pilot jet is clogged. Or maybe there's no fuel in the #2 bowl? But I'd check the plug for sure since that's allot easier than taking the rack down and attempting to extract the pilot. But that still must be done.

With an air compressor it is possible to hold the carb in your hand and plug the holes so that you can blow air into the pilot air jet and check that it is coming out of the pilot bypass hole. You need to put your fingers over the needle jet and main jet holes, the pilot jet hole, and the three pilot inlet holes (I use a little peg of wood to hold the throttle open so I can reach these). If you blow some air or cleaner into the air jet, it should come out of the pilot bypass (assuming your adjustment screw is not closing off that circuit). If no air or cleaner comes out then you have an obstructed passage.
Most likely if there's anything obstructed it's the tip of the pilot jet. On the 550 I need to clean those about every year due to E10 gas and a little dirt from the old tank.

Hey guys, so sorry for the delay. I decided to try the pine-sol soak solution for the whole #2 carb assembly minus its diaphragm and its o-rings (did have to pull it off the rack unfortunately). Followed those procedures and got things back together now with all 4 cylinders firing hot and smooth. Going to proceed to try my new manometer and do a sync today. As always, thanks everyone for the input/ tips. Learning more and more with yall!

Once its synced and ridable put half a can of Berrymans B12 Chemtool in a full tank of gas. ride it till you need more fuel then add the second half of the Chemtool. It will clean the carbs even ore as you enjoy the rides.
I have communicated with them before and got their assurances that it will not hurt carb orings and i myself use it every spring when getting the bikes out for the summerLast edited by chuck hahn; 09-22-2025, 09:31 AM.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
