Not saying oiling the filters is bad but my years of dirtbiking requires cleaning and oiling the filter for soul reason of trapping dirt of a free flowing filter.

I cant see where there would be any harm in oiling em except that at some point they'll need cleaned. This is where it gets most of its ware and tare depening on the cleaner or solvent used to clean it with.

A simple phone call to APE will answer the question about oiling. Regarding K&N filters in general, they don't filter the air very well which is why they flow so well. No oil on a K&N will further reduce it's ability to trap dirt so only do that at your own discression.

Bottom line....if you have oiled them and they work for you, that's all that counts!

Not sure if the instructions are still the same but when I got mine K&N recommended re-oiling between cleanings. Simply brush off the excess dirt and re-oil. They tend to filter even better with a little dirt on them with no loss of flow. I know Chuck Hahn will disagree, but the K&Ns have a short velocity stack molded into the filter opening. There is a slight flare where the clamped portion meets the screen. It's not much of a flare but it's there unless K&N has changed things.

I called APE and they said the filters definitely need to be oiled. I forgot to ask them about cleaning but I assume it must be necessary if you oil them. If you over-oil them and they're a bit restrictive, will that work itself out in a few days or do you need to clean them to get some oil out?

If you over oil them they won't flow so well... you need to clean & do it again in my experience, it doesn't really work it's way out.
