    79 gs850 carbs burn rich

I am having a issue with black smoke out my tailpipe. I know the carbs are burning a little rich and was wondering if I was to take out the airbox and put in pods, will that make it better or worse?
    Thanx

Well if it's running rich, removing the air box and adding pods should help towards leaning the mixture out; but it won't make it right.

why not just fix the problem?

If you spend the time and effort to tune it properly it could be better. Tuning the VM carbs on your '79 is quite straightforward. But it takes a lot of time to get it right.
But fixing the reason for the richness would be a lot easier. Floats must have a problem, or the choke is open a little bit, or something simple like that.

Take them apart and see what is wrong. It is absolutely guaranteed to need new O rings by now, that could be all that is wrong.

        Hi,

What do the plugs look like? Have you ever changed the stock jetting? Did you over-oil your air filter? Have you adjusted the valves lately? Pod filters are too much of a hassle in my book. I like my airbox.

Check your "mega-welcome" in your other thread for the low-down on how to get these bike running their best.

        Thank you for your indulgence,
