Spark Plug Wires perma-ttatched to coil?

Hi,

'81 GS1000 GL.

I have a wire that needs replacing. The boot pulled right off the wire on the right sided rear plug.

I bought 4 ft of plug wire in the hopes of doing all of them. I tried to detach the wires from the coil, but it looks like they are permanently fused on. Does this sound right? It feels like a hot glue, but I can't cut into it.

Do I need new coils with the plug wires attached?

If the boot came off at the spark plug end, no problem.

Just trim about 1/4" from the end of the wire and screw the boot back on.

Better yet, get new boots for all four plugs, the old ones are probably shot.

Oh, yeah, the wires are somewhat permanently attached to the coils, but some have reported modest success digging them out.

You don't need new coils, but the wires were "glued into the coils" at the factory. You will need to dig them out of the coils, while taking care to not damage the screw-on fittings inside the coils. There are threads here which discuss this.
Then thread the new wires into the coils. I strongly suggest new plug caps, I used NGK units from Z1Enterprises, they will know which ones you need. As always, I suggest a call versus just ordering from their web site. Jeff and his folk are very knowledgeable on our bikes.
