Exhaust fume management- help needed

I use my 78 gs1000 for long rides, and have it set up with a Vetter fairing with lowers and bags. The windshield is vented, and has a home made version of a laminar lip. This keeps my head in a nice quiet buffet free area. The vents equalize the pressure bit, and prevent a big "vacuum" like area

The problem is, I can sometimes smell exhaust fumes, which get into the large pocket of calm air behind the fairing. This is a safety issue, as there is no safe level of carbon monoxide. Even small exposures are cumulative.

The problem seems to be caused by the fact the mufflers end right under the large Vetter panniers.The fumes then eddy up and into the calm air.The problem is evident only with the panniers and lowers installed. I have made sure the upper gaskets are tight and aren't leaking.

Here is my question: I propose to get a couple of 6 inch long 1 inch outside diameter light exhaust pipe connectors, and press fit them gently into the stock exhaust openings. This will move the exit point of the exhaust gases back, and I think. prevent them eddying into the calm air. I can play with length until it prevents the fumes.

Will this cause any problems with the exhaust system? Back pressure, jetting etc?

Not likely to cause any additional problems. All you're doing is extending the exit point, correct?

Sounds like a good solution.

I did the same thing on my KZ1300, except I had them chrome-plated, then welded into place.

If you get pipes that turn down, it also makes it a bit quieter.

That could be a good fix but did you also check the bushing/gaskets where the two outside header pipes connect with the muffler. The joint is under the heat shields. I haven't really heard of exhaust fumes being a problem before because of design on the GS with stock exhaust so this could be where your problem is and extending the exit still won't fix it if these are leaking. Probably good to check these first.
