Just Rebuilt carbs, idles well, bogs under load

frist of all, thanks in advance! I have a 1979 Zuki gs550L which i just changed plugs, rebuilt carbs, have cheapy POD air filters, and stock exhaust. She idles great, but when you give her throttle, she'll bog down badly and stall unless you back off. I set the bottom side screws to 1.5 turns out and topside to 1.25. Are these settings a good place to start? I am new to carbs as I am an FI guy. Oh, and when shes sitting there on her kickstand, fuel pours out the outer left carb bowl vent. I haven't a clue as to whats going on here!

Did you rejet for the "cheapy pod filters"? If not it is likely that you will need to.

As for the base settings, I'll let someone with a bit more info on those carbs, fill you in on that...

No, stock jets. With the original jets installed and a stock exhaust I wouldnt think it would be this bad because you are still moving roughly the same amount of air out of the exhaust. If your air mass flow rate is the same coming of the control volume, its the same coming in. I would expect it to run a bit lean, but not completely stall. Can someone verify this?

wtf mate, the prices that website charges for jets is INSANE! You can get Mikuni OE style jets at a stealership (dealership) for 2.50 to 3 dollars each and have them in your hands instantly!

**** off on spending twice as much for the exact same thing!

If you REALLY must have genuine Mikuni jets because you believe it'll make you elite then you could save a dollar each at this site... http://www.jetsrus.com/

So, the dealer would stock jets for a 79? If so, that rocks. We just have to replace the main jet, right? I thought they only came in jet kits which are like $100 or so. For pod filters and stock exhaust, what size do i need? Are the jets the cause of the fuel leaking out of the bowl vent? What should the upper and lower mixture screws be set to for a 79 gs550L?

                          Hi,

I'm afraid those cheap pods will cause you trouble. A more efficient procedure would be to get the K&N pods and a Stage 3 jet kit from Dynojet.

If you don't want to go that route you can try going up three or four sizes on the mains, one size on the pilots, and shim the needle to try and richen up the midrange. Use the plug chop method to be sure the mixture is right at all throttle openings. Good luck.

                          Thank you for your indulgence,

                          BassCliff
