I am looking at the K&N SU-5500 pods for my GS650 82.

I cannot find the answer anywhere.

If you buy one (1) box is there only one (1) filter, so I would need to buy four (4) packs of the filter?

yes they usually come singly unless it states there is a set of 4

The K&N SU-5500 is a replacement for the original filter on a GS550, which installs in the original airbox. So all you need is one, but they don't list it as fitting your bike.
Also it is not a pod filter, which replaces the original airbox with four separate filters attached to the end of each carb. All you need for that is a filter which according to Z1 is a 54mm internal diameter filter. They appear to have several that will fit, perhaps someone else knows the best fit.
