I'm really afraid of screwing up the valve clearances. Mine's an 8v motor, correct? It runs very noisily, so maybe I can try to do that.

Yes. Valve adjustment should be the FIRST thing on any maintanence check-list. Then you check your ignition timing (goes along with points setting), then, finally you tune the carbs.

Nope to all 3
1. This is a result of proper adjustment, not pods
2. K&N makes a drop in for the airbox, mine's 28 years old
3. Maybe gain 1 HP after hours of work. Not really a bonus there. i'd rather ride than pull apart carbs, especially for 1 HP1978 GS 1000 (since new)
