Gas Mileage....?
I've noticed that my 82 650 seems to really guzzle down the fuel. I have a very rough estimate of about 25 MPG, which is about what my car gets! Its kind of embarrassing when you're stopping to fill up and you're buddies still have 3/4 of a tank! Is this a common trait of these older bikes, or might I have a tuning issue?Tags: None -
You have a definite issue. You should be getting twice that mileage.
What part of oHIo? You might be close enough for a visit.
EDIT: I just spend a few minutes looking at your previous posts, it's obvious that you had some definite issues with the bike.
Have they been resolved yet?

You also have to keep in mind how the bike is ridden and at what speed.
Most of the bikes in my stable start dropping mileage like crazy when they get over 65-70 mph. My Wing will get about 42-44 mpg if I am touring leisurely at 55-60 mph. Kick it up to 65, it will barely hit 40 mpg. Hold it at 70, it gets about 38.
My wife's 850 struggled to keep up with a large group on the freeway, doing about 75 into a 15 mph headwind. Got about 29 mpg for two consecutive tanks. Later on that same trip, there were several consecutive tanks in the 52-56 mpg range, with a high of 59.
(Actually, it kept up just fine, it just sucked a LOT of gas doing it.)
My only trip out with "Junior", my 850G"K", I got 39.4 cruising on the freeway at about 70 mph on the way to Red River Rally. On the way home, we took the 2-lanes at a slower pace, got about 43 mpg. That is with NO carb tuning other than the preliminary mixture screw setting of 3 turns out (no further tweaking yet) and a carb sync.
When I get home, I will have a chance to do some more tweaking and maybe get the mileage up a bit.

I get anywhere from 40 to 48mpg on my 650g. At 60mph it gets toward the upper end of 48 and freeway speed (70mph+) closer to 40.

The wind is awesome in my area...blows 10~15mph to the South in the morning, and then 10~15 to the North in the evening. My commute is to the North in the morning, then home in the evening...so it's one of those retarded "up hill both ways" stories. Cruising at 70mph the whole way I use three gallons in two days driving about 100 miles. If I putt along at 55 or 60 I get into the 50's...but I don't have that kind of time.
I also have have a 10 mile east/west portion every day...the way the wind switches I have to spend all my time on one side of my tire. My front tire has been with me nearly two seasons...only have one chicken strip.Comment

I live in southwestern ohio, between cincinnati and dayton. Yeah, this bike is my first, and it had its fair share of problems when i got it. I've replaced the ignition coils, the battery, the R/R unit, and just recently adjusted the fuel gauge send unit. The bike wouldnt start when I first bought her, but I only paid $200 for her, so I'm not at all displeased, i'm just happy to have a bike that i've learned to ride on. It would however be nice to have her in peak condition, or at least as close as possible. You have a definite issue. You should be getting twice that mileage.

Yep, definitely in striking range.
(I am in the Dayton Mall area.)
I am currently out of state (in the flat, boring, HOT Mississippi Delta) and will be returning either the end of August or first of September.
Will probably have some time to help you before I have to leave town again, so toss me a PM with contact info.

Hold on a sec with your MPG figures guys... US or Imperial gallons? Prefix them if you can so its obvious - usmpg or impg respectively. Makes a bit of a difference.
A 200 mile round (80mph+ freeway speed, with some twisties riding) trip on the GSX-1100EF yeilded 7L/100km. This works out at 33usmpg or 40impg, pretty good considering the speed I was travelling at. Probably get better once I tune the bike and give it a bit more running in time; its been sitting for 6 years!
Thats what we like to hear mate! Have you given the carbies a going over yet? Even just a simple clean and reset to stock specs (assuming you're running stock airbox and exhaust) should yeild a big difference in economy and performance. It would however be nice to have her in peak condition, or at least as close as possible.

With stage three pod/pipe I would think you at maybe mid 40's at best.
Are you running a dyno jet kit with the 132's or 138's?Comment

I am averaging 40 miles per gallon on my commuting 650. This is a daily 5 mile slog, mostly 50 mph with a lot of stop lights. Have not noticed any difference if I drive conservatively or if I drive aggressively.
Check your air filter, it may be too oily and thus you are richer than needed. Likewise, check your crankcase for gasoline, petcock failures are famous for poor mileage. If these items check out, then you may want to consider fuel levels in carbs or jetting as a previous owner may have prescribed to the more is better philosophy of carb jetting.
My 650 is not cold blooded, usually just a half choke to start and can ride away by time I have pulled gloves on. Choke completely off in first half mile.Comment
