When you cleaned them did you take them to bits completely ie every bit that comes off, off? Plus what method did you use to clean them, did you use a magnifying glass to check the jets etc?79 GS1000S

I took them apart to as far as my knowledge would allow, took jets out and cleaned them and the carbs with carb and choke cleaner. They look very clean. Do you know how many turns out to set mixture screws, because someone once said that the revs may hang if its running too lean.

Synch the carbs. The slides may be sticking too high allowing too much gas to flow into the engine.

 Hi.

Is your throttle cable sticking? What is your float height? Is the intake and exhaust all stock? There are carb cleaning and adjusting articles on my website. Have a look.

 Thank you for your indulgence,

 BassCliff

synchronize the carbs. trust me. been there, done that. well synchronized carbs allow idle to be where you set it on the adjuster, and not hang.

How would i go about synchronize the carbs i hav'nt done it before is it something i could do my self, also for some reason when i come to a junction or traffic light it often cuts out even if i try throttling it. Could this all be part of the same problem. I just wish this bike would run as well as it looks.

Arriving late, but.... Have you checked petcock vacuum line to make sure it's not leaking? Since you did boots and o-rings, and the throttle cable is not hanging up, maybe the carb vacuum pistons are sticking as was mentioned already.Originally posted by Dan View PostHow would i go about synchronize the carbs i hav'nt done it before is it something i could do my self, also for some reason when i come to a junction or traffic light it often cuts out even if i try throttling it. Having a similar issue.......

On my 82 GS 850 L, I have done the carb cleaning per the articles here, complete with carb dip, and trust me, I was anal about it. Last weekend I set the air mixture with the colortune and synched the carbs with the carb tune. I must have done something right because the throttle response is excellent and it is running really well. But.....I am having a problem getting the idle to settle out. I think it may need a cable adjustment. I haven't had too much time to play with that yet. Possible clue: the idle increased when I turned the bars to the right. I loosened up on it to give it some slack and that stopped. But sometimes it idles up for no apparent reason, and the idle adjuster then becomes non-responsive. Is it possible that when I synched the carbs I set the slides too high? Any other tips will be helpful. Other info: airbox well sealed, K&N stock replacement filter, intake boots appeared fine, replaced o-rings.
