cylinder 2 crapping out ....
Ran fine since I picked up the bike three weeks ago - now no go in cylinder two - got spark, swapped plugs, soakin' wet. Obviously a fuel issue with the carb - what's my first step ? Already got the carbs off as I'm tearing the bike down to give her a good clean up (stock 81 GS1100).Tags: None -
Probably a petcock with a bad diaphragm, leaking fuel down the vacuum line to carburetor #2. Very common problem. Pull the vacuum line off, it should be dry. If there's fuel in it, there's your problem. Replace the petcock, the carb itself is not the problem. -

Thanks - I see there are rebuild kits - is it worth the touble/savings or should I just look for a replacement unit ?Comment

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't fit right at all, sometimes the petcocks are too corroded to be rebuilt. Did you find out that's the problem?
If so I would just buy one, then you know it will work. If the money is tight you can turn it into a manual petcock easy enough.Comment

I 'd already tore it down to clean up so wasn't able to check, I really believe that's my issue and will go ahead and pick one up (off ebay ?). Thanks.Comment

I had the same problem. I tried a rebuild kit and it stopped the leak, but something didn't work right or I broke something and the fuel wouldn't shut off when the bike was off, so I ended up buying a whole new petcock. So be careful when you take the petcock apart.Comment

like Kent said its usally better to just replace it. You can get em as low as 60.00 brand new. Its not worth it to risk flooding the engine with fuel and possibly ruining the motor to save a few bucks.Comment
