1985 GS700E Diaphragm Replacement

Hello,

I am looking at buying a GS700E. The bike I found needs the diaphragm replaced. My question is how hard will this be and what is the cost of a new one. And can the bike run with it damaged? TIA

What kind of diaphragm? For the petcock, carburator, or ?

No disrespect but it concerns me when someone that is not mechanically inclined wants to purchase an old vehicle. There is ongoing maintenance that needs to be tended to with a 25+ year old vehicle, so unless you enjoy wrenching an newer bike is a better choice.

Thats kind of mean, he may not understand carbs or engines at worst but doesn't mean he's mechanically troubled. As long as he's willing to do whats needed to keep it going it shouldnt be a problem.


I know theres a 700 for sale in the LA area, this doesnt happen to be the area the one you want is?

In all seriousness, and on a similar note, the petcock diaphragm on the 250t has taken a dump, and I'm currently slightly baffled, not by the replacement process, but the acquisition of the part. Although my search has been limited to bikebandit, just the diaphragm wasn't listed, or even shown in the exploded view. I'm sure you guys are more well versed and experienced in such matters, I just need to know if I A. have to buy the whole assembly B. am just being a dumbass and not looking in the right places or C. can use a petcock from another bike that (may) fits and is also vacuum. Basically I'm poor and want to save what I can.

Hi Nick:

The carb diaphraghm is easily replaced and is easily done when you have the carbs dismantled for cleaning, something that is a must for an old bike.

A hole in the diaphragm will cause poor running conditions and the OEM replacement is 150 USD or so. Take the offer of the free one from the kind person here and move forward.
