750 petcock replacement
Hi all, I'm about to replace the petcock on my '79 750N, and from what I read in this forum I think this one is supposed to work, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the post again to check

Hi Allie, Have you tried rebuilding yours? I've rebuilt many over the years and always found them to be satifactory. Z1 sells a good kit, for little cash. Just my 2 cents. Ray -
Can't remember the mounting bolt spacing on the 750, isn't it 51mm? Other than that it will work fine. There is also a model with a short and one with a long standpipe for the reserve, why not call Jeff and ask, he'll steer you straight.Comment

I'll have to check the bolts on mine. I don't know, I've heard so many stories of the rebuild kits not working. I'm reluctant to believe such stories, but I put a diaphragm in from the K&L kit and it doesn't work. There is in fact no way it CAN work without the aid of some kind of 'enlargement' pill (tested by someone with a name like Dr. Lance Hardcrunch), because the o-ring plunger is not long enough. I think the petcocks are the same for all the '79 750s, so I don't think it could be the wrong kit (it came with the bike when I got it). Just seems easier to change over at this point."Men will never be free until Mark learns to do The Twist."

Just an FYI for anyone searching for info, I ordered a separate diaphragm for my bike from Z-1 and it's the same dimensions as the one currently in use. The plunger thingy is 17mm long, in other words, too short. I have to send it back, sometimes size DOES matter. I really don't get why they are consistently too short, my bike is one of the ones listed in its applications.
I also measured the bolts on mine, 44mm which is the spacing of Z-1s aftermarket petcock. Enough I say, I'm ordering it."Men will never be free until Mark learns to do The Twist."

Those kits work fine on some models, don't fit at all on the others.Comment

Probably no one has told Z1 about it.Comment

I'll explain it in the return note but I'm not sure what Z-1 can do if Suzuki used different dimensions in same year/model bikes and didn't bother to tell anyone about it."Men will never be free until Mark learns to do The Twist."

I don't think they did, I meant the kits fit some models, and don't fit others. I don't think there is a variance between Suzuki petcocks on the same model. The error is in the listing of which models the kits fit.Comment

OEM for $77.57 here and probably about $6 shipping. They last a long time. If it works for 25 yrs, you probably won't feel like riding anymore anyway because you'll be 50 yrs old then.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

Ah okay. Please stop making sense and leave me my conspiracy theories. Anyway I will 'splain it to the Z-1 folks when I ship it. This kills me too because I threw the original diaphragm out before verifying the new one worked. (this is confusing, I mean the OLD new one which I am using right now - the NEW new one is the one I'm sending back) I could easily have swapped the o-rings because they are the same dimensions and that's what was bad on the original - the diaphragm part still worked fine. Doh!
Thanks for the link 1948. I will be 50 a hell of a lot sooner than 25 years and I assure you, I will still feel like riding.

I'm 63 today and I figure I've got at least 20 more yrs. Just kidding about the 50 stuff. The alien hairstyle makes you look younger. (yes I realize it's just an avatar.)Ah okay.
