VM26ss carby rack, tidying up other parts

Gday all, just wondering if anyone has ever gone down the path of chroming things such as the accelerator shaft, choke shaft and throttle stop (idle adjuster screw)??

Im just curious as mine are starting to look a bit "old" and doggy.

I've had good luck just polishing some of those parts.

Put any information that you have to make your bike look great in here.

Thanks Bruce, awesome carby job there mate!

I have previously tried polishing the choke lever etc a few times when I have been doing other work on the bike but even with the new buffing wheel on the bench grinder and trying various buffing compounds the finish never seems to get as good as I would like, thats why I just hopped to the "chrome" thought.

At least it would stay nice and be easy to clean, though Im not too certain about clearance on the choke and throttle shafts.

Most of the hardware is zinc plated, which can be lightly buffed. But anything stronger than say chrome polish will remove the zinc and allow rust to attack the base metal even faster.

When these carbs were redone the metal parts were replated using a Caswell's zinc plating kit. Not cheap, but nice quality finish.

Thanks Ed, I wasnt sure what finish they were originally. Mine have been in the weather (probably for many years before I got it) and I guess that at 34yo, well the finish is gone lol.

If they were originally zinc plated chrome should be OK too?? I think from memory that coating thickness wise they are similar?

Chrome would be fine except it's expensive. The throttle shaft is hard chromed so I wouldn't change that. Otherwise, zinc is more "correct", cheaper, and should hold up fine durability wise unless you live by the ocean.

lol, unfortunately I do Ed. Well it is only 5km as the crow flys lol

I looked at both the throttle shafts I have on my original VM's and the ones from my donor (1979 750LN) and neither look like they are/were hard chromed. The both look like zinc :'(

I could get one set hard chromed when I send my fork staunchions away to be done soon

Also as an FYI...Z1 now carries replacement spools for the choke levers..I havent done it on my bike but have "dyed" parts like that before...just using simple fabric dye soak thew parts and rinse them off...I am planning on doing mine in black..I hate the white plastic..also you can make plugs for the end 2 carbs where the fuel pipes would go except their not machined through...just a couple ideas for you.
