    850G carb issues

    Hey all,

    I was a member of this site a couple years ago when I had my GS 750e, but that bike is long sold. I got a chance to ride it a couple weeks ago, and it convinced me to buy another 'zuk. I just picked up an '82 GS 850G for a song, but I'm having some running issues.

    The PO put pod filters on the bike, claiming that it had no airbox when he got it. It also has some pretty funky mufflers that are definitely JC Whitney add-ons. The bike starts up and revs just fine, until you try to ride it. It then sputters, backfires, and won't rev past 2500rpm. It also seems to be running rich, which would be contrary to my idea that the pods have messed up the fuel mixture. I'll be pulling the plugs next, to see what I'm dealing with, but is there a common problem I'm missing here? Should I try to find a stock airbox for the bike? I know that Honda CB 750s tend to run better with the stock box, because of the resonating action and equal air distribution among the carbs. Just looking for some input, I'll get a picture of the bike up later to appeal to the average forum folk. Thanks!

      aside of a obvious carb cleaning and adj., make sure you don't have an air leak at the intake boots, spray a little starting fluid on the intake boots while the bike is running, if it revs, you got a leak.

          The carbs must be rejetted if the intake or exhaust system is modified from stock.

              Do a plug read so you know what you're starting with.

              You said that you thought that it was rich, so you may find that the PO has over jetted to compensate for the pods. Certainly check for air leaks too, but these would contribute to a lean condition.

                  I had the carbs apart once already, and after making sure all the jets were clean, I noted that the mains were 115s. Is that correct for a stock setup? A plug read is definitely the next step. Hopefully I'll have some time to mess with the bike this weekend.

                      115 mains are STOCK. With pods and a different exhaust, you would want to start with something in the 120-125 range, depending on how restrictive the exhaust is. If it is rather free-flowing, you might end up close to 130.

                      If it is running rich, check the float height. 22.4mm +/- 1.0mm.

                          Float height! I bet that's it. I had fuel pour out of the intake end of one of the carbs while I was figuring out the vacuum petcock, and someone seems to have messed with the carbs recently.

                          I plan on finding a stock airbox for the bike ASAP, as I don't want to have to deal with too much jetting, although I should bump it up for the exhaust anyway...
