The sending unit runs on resistance through the float assembly. The higher/lower the float, the more/less resistance (in ohms) to the fuel gauge. I think it has a pretty good explanation in the service manual?

No grounding- just think of the sending unit as a variable resistor.

I realize that it is a variable resistor, but the reciever (guage) is still dependant on the white and black ground wire (grounded on the tank sender).

My 1000's sending unit has two wires connected to it. one of those two wires is connected to the sending units mounting plate and is the 'ground' connection or return path to the battery.

you would have the wire from the 'fuel gauge' connected to one side of the potentiometer and the other side attached to the mounting plate.

if your sender has only one wire, then a ground connection would have to be provided to the fuel tanks mounting bolt
