    Questions for running lean.

    So this is for the new to me free 850G.

    The bike had pods and 4-1 on it. Came to me with carbs rebuilt and rejetted to stock (have not verified) and with airbox and stock exhaust, actually the pipes I got are 850L pipes... but they work.

    Anyways got it together and rust cleaned out of tank and a bunch of minor issues but seems to be running lean. It starts up and idles great, then when I ride it hangs on a high idle and will slowly go down again, also seems hot... but not sure other than hotter than the 650 seems.

    The PO said the slides might have been drilled, what would that affect back to stock?

    I have not verified the setting on the air/fuel screws and that is my plan to check what its at now and start at 2 1/2 out, I cant really fit anything in to adjust with the tank on so might be a few tries to get that right. Basically I plan to do highest idle method on carb 1 as I can reach that, pull the tank and turn the others to match, and check again and set idle.

    Anyways, would the drilled slide make it lean or rich?

    Oh and the boots and all that are new so not an air leak.

      Why don't you take 15 minutes, pull the carbs, verify the jetting and whether the slides are drilled?

          Yes, check the carbs. And change the intake boot O-ring at the same time. We can not diagnose the unknown.

              I do plan to check all that, my question still remains what does the drilled slides do (if they are) towards running lean or rich?

                  I don't think the drilled slides will affect the carbs being rich or lean - just throttle response in terms of quickness...

                      Something I figured out when rebuilding and installing the Dynojet kit in my carbs.

                      You can see the main jet if you pull the drain plug from the bowl and use a flashlight to look in there. If they are clean, you'll be able to read them.

                          The reason I did not dig into the carbs is the PO is not your everyday CL guy, its a member from here that offered up the 850 for free to another member and picked me.

                          Everything was is great condition and he had the carb rack freshly cleaned up and rejetted to the stock jets. Had new intake boots on with orings, the only unknown was the slides being drilled or not and wanted to know if that would affect anything.

                          I did not get to the bike last night as I was changing the radiator in the truck... to many projects...
