    Idle adjust knob

    Which direction does the idle adjust knob need to turn to lower the rpm previous to an after sync start? Does this gadget ever bottom out or come completely loose from its housing? And any idea on a safe number of turns in or out as a starting point?

    clockwise increases idle, starting point would be to wind it off the carbs, then wind it in until the slides just raise slightly. then adjust as required once the bike has warmed up
    1978 GS1085.

      Read up on bench synching your carbs and you'll be in a good position to start with.

          ive done hours of research and reading. countless sleepless nights just carefully working and inspecting the bike. waiting on a good place to find new boots and clamps then im set. but in all my reading, it didnt have exact instructions, until now.. whats the other "knob" with the spring on it? the one mounted on the block? this isnt listed either. maybe the choke adjust or something?

              Not saying youre wrong cause im sure your not, but just to make sure, we are talking about the spring and knob on the intake side of the motor that faces out toward the right side of the bike? And positioned between #2 and #3... Why would the cam chain need an external adjustment like that? Thanks for the answer though.

                In your welcome from Bikecliff, you will notice a link to his home page. Look on the right side and you will see a carb tutorial from Nessism. Every part of the carb is explained in simple fashion. Even I understand it ! Good luck.

                  If it looks something like this, it's a cam chain tensioner, an automatic cam chain tensioner, you could have big problems if you start messing with it without knowing what your doing?
                  It AUTOMATICALLY adjusts to put the required tension on your cam chain and take out unecessary slack as your cam chain stretches over time.
